History of Initiative

The legend that has developed about the Tenganan Pegringsingan Land is a gift from the God Indra. God Indra gave it to Wong Paneges—the ancestors of the Tenganan people, for their loyalty and intelligence. Wong Paneges comes from an area that is currently located in Bedahulu in Gianyar.

Tenganan itself comes from the word “Tengen” which means right hand, good-natured, and trusted person. Similarly, Wong Peneges, which comes from the word “Wong” meaning person.

Bet Area Zoning

The bet area is divided into 5 zones, namely:

  • Bet Batu Lamak: on the northwest side of the village settlement
    • Bet Bukit Kangin: to the east of the village settlement
    • Bet Moding: north of the village settlement
    • Bet Candidasa: on the south side
    • Bet Besaka: to the north of the village

Management Practices

The Indigenous Community of Tenganan Pegringsingan has written customary rules known as Awig-awig—which also refers to the customary law of indigenous people in Bali.

Some Regulations in Awig-awig

  • Article 14 prohibits cutting down trees and burning trees.
  • Article 61 prohibits taking certain types of wood.
  • Article 38 regulates the collection of forest products by the customary village for ceremonies.
  • Article 54 regulates the fulfillment of the customary village's needs from the forest.
  • Article 55 regulates the collection of forest products for the community.

Legal Holders

The Indigenous Community of Tenganan Pegrisingan does not yet have a legal basis or specific regulations governing the recognition and protection of rights or the protection of community-managed areas.
