Bukit Kuri
Province Kalimantan Barat, Kab. Ketapang, Sungai Laur, Desa Sinar Kuri
History of Initiative
Bukit Kuri is a rock hill that was once used as a meditation place by shamans who wanted to heal people. Before entering the medical world, the Dayak Lawangk community believed that the stone wood found in Bukit Kuri was a place for meditation, as an area used to communicate with ancestors to ask for healing for the sick. In the past, the Bukit Kuri area was forbidden for anyone to enter. However, that prohibition no longer exists today. Now, Bukit Kuri is utilized as a tourist destination. Bukit Kuri is important for the community because it serves as the boundary area of the village. In addition, Bukit Kuri has several important points within it:
- Gua Maria: Gua Maria is used as a place of worship for the community at certain times (Maria Month, October) every Sunday. Usually, activities are conducted by the community in one church, but it is also possible for other churches to visit Gua Maria as a place of worship.
- Mprogom: Mprogom is a bend in the river that is utilized to ask for rain. During the dry season, the community dips a special stone while reciting a prayer/mantra to bring rain.
- Old Cemetery: The Old Cemetery is an ancient burial area (Kik Julak) that is regarded as someone very important by the community, as he is the founding figure of Sinar Kuri Village and has contributed greatly to the development of the settlement.
Bukit Kuri will be utilized as a tourist destination managed by POKDARWIS of Sinar Kuri Village under BUMDES. The area around Bukit Kuri, which has natural resources, is managed communally by the community; all community members may take the natural resources available in Bukit Kuri, except outsiders who wish to take them must obtain permission from the local community. Additionally, there are individually owned trees specifically referring to honey trees marked with codes. Bukit Kuri was once registered by the Tourism Office in the Anugerah Pesona Indonesia (API) event in the Adventure and Sports tourism category. Bukit Kuri is managed by POKDARWIS (Tourism Awareness Group), the Village Government (Pemdes), and the Dayak Lawangk Customary Institution. The main rule in Bukit Kuri is that swearing (curse words) is prohibited, and there are certain trees that must not be cut down (ulin, tembelian).
By protecting Bukit Kuri, the community is also protecting the natural resources found in Bukit Kuri, including flora and fauna that can be taken and utilized for daily life. Furthermore, Bukit Kuri also has the potential for tourism development that will later impact the sustainability of the Bukit Kuri community. If Bukit Kuri is protected, the important points within Bukit Kuri will also be preserved.
