History of Initiative

The origin of Bukit Nerakit begins with the story of an eagle that laid an egg but could not find a perch, only the pointed Bukit Batu Daya was available, causing the eagle's egg to fall and break. Then, the eagle became angry and scratched the peak of Bukit Batu Daya, causing it to break. One of the fragments was thrown to the area of Kalam (the location that is now Bukit Nerakit). Tembawang for the Lawangk indigenous community is a general term for the Dayak people in Ketapang and West Kalimantan. This term refers to a piece of land along with non-timber forest products including leban rattan, ronsam (comfortable material) on it that is owned by a customary community. This tembawang is located at the foot of Bukit Nerakit. This area was previously used as a periau (local language) or an old settlement, for raising pigs, chickens, and farming. Thus, this place is used to meet needs and harvest natural resources.

The tembawang in Bukit Nerakit and the tembawang in other regions have different management. The tembawang in Bukit Nerakit is mostly privately owned; not everyone has ownership of land in Bukit Nerakit, unlike in Bukit Kuri where ownership is communal. The natural resources are also utilized only by the owners of the tembawang; if outsiders wish to take from it, they must have permission from the tembawang owner.

By protecting the Tembawang Bukit Nerakit, the community is also protecting the natural resources present in Bukit Nerakit, including tembawang, flora, and fauna that can be harvested and utilized for daily life. Furthermore, if Bukit Nerakit is protected, the important points within Bukit Nerakit will also be preserved.
