Danau Jentawang
Province Kalimantan Barat, Kab. Sintang, Ketungau Hilir, Desa Jentawang Hilir
History of Initiative
In the 1970s, there was a person who first opened a field in Lubuk Damai named Kaya Carik. Initially, the community lived in Bukit Tapang Bara—at the peak of Jentawang. At that time, there were six chieftains or tribal leaders (tuak) who led, named Tuak Sangki, Tuak Garu, Tuak Rimpeh, Tuak Aret, Tuak Ramai, and Tuak Lempak Bena.
It is also told that there was once a conflict ngayau—a headhunting ritual by the Dayak Tribe in Kalimantan in the past. This is evidenced by the remains of a gupung bindang in Dusun Seputih, like a storage warehouse. As a result of the ngayau conflict, the community split and moved to Temawai Tana Nyala, then to Temawai Sungai Baju.
In 1972, the community moved to Desa Jentawang which spread into three dusun: Rumah Betang Sungai Jalang (Dusun Tertong), Rumah Betang Sepan Binjai (Dusun Seputih), and Rumah Betang Penamar (Dusun Lubuk Damai).
Management Practices
The Dayak Sebaruk Indigenous Community has a protected management area, namely Lake Jentawang. Since 1972, the community has utilized this lake for fishing wisely—without using poison, electricity, or jermal. However, over time, threats have emerged such as illegal mining, palm oil plantations, and fishing with environmentally unfriendly tools (source: wwf.id).
The management rules for Lake Jentawang include:
- Using poison, including traditional poison, is prohibited as it damages the fish ecosystem.
- Overfishing with warin or jermal is prohibited.
- Using nets smaller than two and a half inches is prohibited.
The zoning of the lake is divided into protected zones and core zones. The core zone must not be entered by anyone. The community manages resources wisely through communal fish harvesting (source: wwf.id).
Biodiversity
Sustainable management contributes to ecosystems and community welfare. Environmentally friendly regulations ensure a larger fish yield during harvest time. The community also has a deeper understanding of local fish species, such as:
- Catfish
- Biawan Fish
- Toman Fish
- Baong Fish
- Menyadin Fish
- Piang Fish
- Piam Fish
- Hampala Fish
- Seluang Fish
- Tapah Fish
- Tengadak Fish
