Kampung Aryobu
Province Papua, Kab. Kepulauan Yapen, Windesi, Desa Aryobu
History of Initiative
The people of Kampung Aryobu are part of the Onate Tribe who originally settled in Ansinawi (the old village). Later, most of the Payai and Anderi clans exchanged with the Busami Tribe of the Rombe Clan. The agreed exchange was between women and land. After successfully making the exchange, the community settled on the coast of Kampung Aryobu, specifically on the banks of the Tefakansai River. Since 1978, the community has moved to Wawong Hanimamori (the new village) until now. Kampung Aryobu is considered an important place by the Aryobu community. Kampung Aryobu is an area of forest to the coast—the community agreed to protect Kampung Aryobu because this village is also considered a habitat for birds of paradise and turtles. Furthermore, to ensure that important places related to history/culture are preserved as the identity of the community and can be managed sustainably. Protection of this area has been carried out for generations—the community believes that their ancestors taught them to utilize natural resources in a limited way. Although protection initiatives have been carried out for generations, this protection practice began to be conducted procedurally with the assistance of external institutions in 2017 together with WWF Indonesia. The program includes mentoring, facilitating participatory mapping, preparing management plans, identifying wildlife potential (turtles and birds of paradise), and socializing the registration of community-managed conservation areas in Kampung Aryobu.
Management Practices
The main rule established in protecting Kampung Aryobu is to not engage in illegal hunting. Currently, management is carried out collectively by the community under the responsibility of customary institutions and village government.
