Recommendations for the Government of the Republic of Indonesia at the 4th Meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity

As the negotiations of the 26th Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA-26) and the 4th Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI-4) of the Convention on Biological Diversity are ongoing, WGII views the recognition of the rights and contributions of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities in conservation efforts and sustainable use of biodiversity as reinforced in Goal C of

KM-GBF as very crucial, especially in its implementation at the national level. KM-GBF marks a historical milestone to ensure that the practices of protecting and sustainably using biodiversity can be conducted inclusively and equitably. This is a result of long-term efforts made by Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities to maintain their rights in relation to nature and their territories, where in the context of Indonesia this is also mandated in Article 18b paragraph (1) "The state recognizes and respects the units of indigenous peoples and their traditional rights as long as they are still alive and in accordance with the development of society and the principles of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia, as regulated by law" and Article 28I paragraph (2) "Cultural identity and traditional community rights are respected in line with the development of times and civilization."

The government has made efforts to protect and recognize the rights of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities through the available legislative frameworks, and thus this can be part of strengthening the government's achievements towards national and global biodiversity commitments.
